Transfer Scholarships for Non-Residents of West Virginia for Spring 2023

Current scholarship information and values pertain to incoming transfer students for spring 2023 and is not retroactive to previous classes or currently enrolled students. Students entering WVU prior to the spring 2023 semester may have been offered different scholarships and/or amounts. Future students may also have different criteria or values.

For consideration, students must be admitted to certain campuses by the deadlines listed for each scholarship. Please review all information carefully.

How to Apply & Deadlines

No separate application is necessary for consideration. Students must be admitted by December 1, 2022 to the WVU Morgantown, Beckley, or Keyser campus as an incoming, first-time transfer student coming to one of WVU's campuses from another institution outside of the WVU system. As part of the admissions process, students must submit official transcripts to WVU Undergraduate Admissions.

Students who meet the admission deadline will be considered for scholarships (or increases to scholarships if applicable) based on submission of new transcripts if the information is updated on their WVU student record by January 15, 2023.

For initial consideration, students must be transferring into a WVU campus from another institution. Current WVU students who change campuses within the WVU system cannot gain a Transfer Scholarship. However, current students already receiving a Transfer Scholarship can continue to receive the scholarship while attending Morgantown, Keyser, or Beckley. Scholarship values differ depending on campus and will be adjusted as students change campuses within the WVU system.

Please be aware that incoming students majoring in online programs of study are not eligible for institutional scholarships. Students beginning in on-campus majors in fall 2021 or later will lose their institutional scholarship eligibility if they switch to an online program of study at any point.

Credit Hours

Students admitted to a first bachelor’s degree program must have 12 to 115 transferable credit hours to WVU. Students admitted to a first associate degree program must have 12 to 57 transferable credit hours to WVU.

Grade Point Average

For the Transfer Scholarship Level 1, students must have a minimum transfer GPA of 3.5. For the Transfer Scholarship Level 2, students must have a minimum transfer GPA of 3.0.

The Transfer GPA is calculated by WVU Admissions based on a review of transcripts received from prior institutions. The credit hours and grades for transfer courses accepted by WVU are converted into WVU’s semester and grading systems. Be aware that the number of transfer credit hours and transfer GPA at WVU may differ from your credit hours and GPA from your prior institution.

Transfer Scholarships will be adjusted or removed from the financial aid offer as additional transcripts arrive and are evaluated by WVU Admissions, based on the updated number of transferable credits and updated transfer GPA.

  • If the number of transferable credit hours exceeds the maximum (115 for bachelor’s, 57 for associate), the Transfer Scholarship will be removed from the financial aid offer.
  • The Transfer Level 1 Scholarship offer will change to the Level 2 offer if the transfer GPA drops below 3.5 but remains at least 3.0.
  • We will continue to honor Transfer Level 2 Scholarship offers made to students whose transfer GPA drops below 3.0 after the initial offer if the transfer GPA remains at least 2.75 after all transcripts are received.
  • Transfer Scholarships will be removed from the financial aid offer if the transfer GPA drops below 2.75.

Renewal Information

To renew Transfer Scholarships for subsequent academic years, all scholars are required to have a minimum overall 2.75 GPA at the end of each academic year and earn at least 30 credit hours during the academic year (fall, spring, and summer).

Please note that students whose first enrollment is the spring semester - or who have deferred their scholarship for one semester - may be reviewed against a 15 earned credit hour requirement for that academic year. Starting with the next academic year, they will return to the normal requirement of 30 earned credit hours per academic year.

Students are notified at the end of the spring semester if these requirements have not been met. Students who are falling below the standards at the end of the spring semester may use summer classes to attempt to up deficiencies in earned hours and/or to improve the overall GPA in order to regain their scholarship renewal eligibility. Visit our Renewal Requirements page for more information about scholarship renewal.
