Is Parent Information Needed on the FAFSA?

Most undergraduate students are considered "dependent" for federal aid purposes, meaning parent information is required on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Students are not automatically considered "independent" if they support themselves or are not claimed on parent taxes. There are specific questions on the FAFSA which determine dependency.

To help determine if a student is "dependent" or "independent," visit the Federal Student Aid Dependency Status website.

There are extraordinary circumstances in which students may appeal their dependency. See our Dependency Appeal webpage for conditions that may and may not be considered for an appeal.
