What Is Verification?
The U.S. Department of Education requires schools participating in federal student aid programs to annually verify the data submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Verification involves the review of tax documents and household information to ensure the accuracy of the FAFSA application. To complete verification, students and parents, as applicable, are asked to submit federal tax documentation and forms.
Students selected for verification will be notified via their MIX email that they have unsatisfied requirements on their account for financial aid. Once a student is selected, the verification process must be completed before WVU can award and/or disburse financial aid.
Who Is Selected?
Any student who completes a FAFSA may be chosen for verification by the Department of Education.
*WVU reserves the right to select any student where there appears to be a possibility of conflicting information.
Please allow five to seven business days for the verification process to be completed after all documents have been submitted. The process may take longer if documents are incomplete or additional information is required.
If verification results in a change to your financial aid package, you will receive notification via your student MIX email. You can also view the financial aid section on your STAR account via the WVU Portal at any time to review changes to your financial aid package or account balance.
WVU’s deadline for priority consideration for aid is March 1. To avoid a delay of your financial aid, verification must be completed by July 7 for the 2019-2020 fall semester to allow processing time for your financial aid. Federal aid will not disburse if verification has not been completed. If verification is submitted past the above dates, students may be subject to late fees.
Students selected for verification after financial aid has disbursed have 30 days to submit documentation. If verification is not submitted within 30 days, the financial aid package will be cancelled until eligibility can be reestablished.
Students can conveniently review their tasks for verification by logging into their wvu.verifymyfafsa.com account using their WVU login credentials (WVU master ID and password) to complete and submit documentation for verification.
If this is the first time logging in, students will be asked to verify your first/last name, date of birth, and social security number. More information is available on the Create Verify My FAFSA Account page.
Students must submit all requested documentation before the verification process can be completed and financial aid can be awarded and/or disbursed.
Verification of Tax Information
Students and/or parents who were selected for the verification process often must provide confirmation of taxes filed. Instructions on how to verify income, what to do if not required to file taxes, and what to do if no income was earned can be found here.
