Scholarship Appeal or Deferment FAQs
Will My Information Be Kept Confidential?
The University respects the privacy of those reporting Prohibited Conduct and will endeavor to respect requests for confidentiality if possible. However, the University has certain legal obligations to address Prohibited Conduct and to prevent its recurrence and, as a result, cannot guarantee confidentiality. When the University must proceed with an investigation against the wishes of a Complainant, the University will take necessary steps to address any safety and other considerations relevant under the circumstances. In determining whether a Complainant’s request for confidentiality can be maintained, the University may consider a range of factors and evaluate the request in the context of its responsibility to provide a safe and nondiscriminatory environment for all members of the University community. If situations are included that pertain to the wellbeing of the student, such as mental health concerns or food or housing insecurities, those may be reported to other departments in the University to allow them to provide support to the student.
If the WV Promise Scholarship requires you to send your appeal to the State, your permission will be requested before forwarding any documents.
Is My Scholarship Appeal Approval Guaranteed?
Requests are reviewed on an individual basis, and approval is not guaranteed. If approved, please note that semesters in which you did not receive the scholarship due to not meeting the renewal requirements will still be counted against the maximum number of semesters for the scholarship. If an exception is approved, approval is one-time-only and does not guarantee future exceptions will be granted.
How Do I Get I Get My Scholarship(s) Back if I Had an Approved Deferral?
Before returning full-time to WVU, you must reach out to the WVU Hub to have your scholarships reinstated. Pending all renewal requirements are met, the scholarships will be reinstated.
I Was a First-time Freshman Who Left WVU, Attended Another Institution, and Am Now Returning to WVU. Can I Receive My First-time Freshmen Scholarship(s)?
No. Students who attend another post-secondary institution, except for students who participate in a WVU-approved study abroad experience or receive prior approved Transient Coursework to study elsewhere while remaining a degree-seeking WVU student, forfeit their first-time freshmen scholarships.
Part-Time Scholarship Request FAQs
What is a Part-Time Request?
A Part-Time Request is appropriate for students who:
- are graduating this academic year
- with no additional degree-pursuant courses available
- enrolled in less than 12 credit hours
If you are enrolled in less than 6 hours, your institutional scholarships will be prorated.
For the WV Promise Scholarship, you may receive a prorated amount in your final 2 semesters of eligibility only. You will be automatically evaluated for part-time WV Promise eligibility.
Will My Scholarship(s) Be Prorated?
Institutional scholarships will be prorated below 6 credit hours upon an approved Part-Time Scholarship Request Form. The Promise Scholarship is based on University Tuition and University Fees for degree-pursuant hours and will be adjusted accordingly.
When Should I Submit My Scholarship Appeal?
Part-time requests may be submitted once you are registered for the semester you are requesting, and your enrollment plans are complete. Submitting these requests before you are finished registering delays processing and may impact the scholarship amount.
I’m Not in My Last Year of Eligibility for My Promise Scholarship, but There Are No Degree-pursuant Courses Available This Semester. Can I Fill Out a Part-time Request?
No. You will need to fill out a State Aid Appeal to request to receive Promise while enrolled in less than full-time degree-pursuant courses if you are not in your final year of eligibility. Approval is not guaranteed. More information about appealing your WV Promise Scholarship can be found on the WV Promise Scholarship Appeals website.
