- Undergraduate Nursing Scholarships: Gift aid based on academic performance and/or financial need. Scholarships can be offered by WVU or by an outside source.
- Undergraduate Nursing Loans: Money that students borrow for college expenses which must be repaid (usually after college).
- Other HSC Scholarships: General scholarships that are not specific to nursing. Gift aid based on academic performance and/or financial need. Scholarships can be offered by WVU or by an outside source.
Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship Opportunities
**The following scholarships require completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by February 20. Upperclassmen must also complete the School of Nursing Scholarship Application by February 20. Preference will be given to upperclassmen when awarding scholarships. Contact the School of Nursing for scholarship application and deadlines for submission.
ANIDO FAMILY NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships primarily for West Virginia residents enrolled in the undergraduate program at the School of Nursing who are the first generation of their family to attend college. Recipients shall be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. First preference is for Hispanic students as allowed by law. Second preference is for West Virginia residents. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year provided they continue to meet the selection criteria outlined. Recipients shall be determined by the appropriate officials in the School of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Services.
MARY H. ARBUCKLE SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is available to undergraduate nursing students. Students meeting the following requirements will be considered: 1) demonstrate financial need; 2) have a minimum 3.0 GPA; and 3) a U.S. citizen.
DR. SHIRLEY BELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship will be provided to undergraduate junior and/or senior nursing students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year provided they continue to meet the selection criteria outlined. Recipients shall be determined by the appropriate officials in the School of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Services.
FAST TRACK (BS/BA TO BSN) ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP
Available to students enrolled in the BS/BA to BSN program. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise.
REBECCA FAIN COCHRAN AND DR. ROBERT CARTER COCHRAN SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship for undergraduate students enrolled in the West Virginia University School of Nursing. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and financial need. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year. Recipients shall be determined by the appropriate officials in the School of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Services. A FAFSA must be submitted.

IMOGENE PEER FOSTER NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is awarded to nursing students who demonstrate academic promise and financial need. First preference will be given to West Virginia residents residing in Hardy County. A FAFSA must be submitted.
FRANK FRANKENBERGER FUND
Fund used for nursing students who have an emergency need that impairs their ability to graduate. Preference given to seniors. A FAFSA must be submitted.
HELENE FULD HEALTH TRUST SCHOLARSHIPS
Funds will be used for scholarships in the School of Nursing.
SUZANNE WELLER GROSS BOOK SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship shall be used for the purchase of textbooks for undergraduate nursing students. Recipient shall demonstrate high academic achievement as determined by the WVU School of Nursing.
AMY PRATT HARTMAN SCHOLARSHIP
To provide scholarships to students enrolled in the West Virginia University School of Nursing. First preference will be for graduates of Moorefield High School in Moorefield, WV. Second preference is for residents of Hardy, Hampshire, Pendleton and Grant counties in West Virginia, and Clarke, Shenandoah, Warren, Fauquier, and Frederick counties in Virginia including the city of Winchester. Recipients shall demonstrate financial need and academic promise by maintaining a grade point average of 3.25. Recipients will be determined by the appropriate officials in the School of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Support and Services. A FAFSA must be submitted.
MARTHA HAWKINS NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Funds will be used for scholarships in the School of Nursing.
BUTCH & LESA HIGGINS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to undergraduate nursing students who demonstrate financial need and show high academic promise as determined by the WVU School of Nursing.
BRETT SAMUEL JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is available to undergraduate Nursing students who are 1) West Virginia residents, 2) demonstrate financial need, 3) show academic promise and; 4) are residents of Tucker or Wood Counties. Students who are recipients of the West Virginia Promise Scholarship or successor programs are not eligible for this award. A FAFSA and School of Nursing Scholarship application is required.
JENNY JONES MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Provides scholarships for West Virginia residents who are students enrolled at the undergraduate level of the WVU School of Nursing. Recipients shall demonstrate financial need.
HAZEL A. JOHNSON NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to undergraduate nursing students enrolled for a minimum of 9 credit hours each semester. Students meeting the following requirements will be considered: 1) a high school graduate; 2) West Virginia resident; 3) demonstrate financial need; 4) maintain a 2.5 GPA; and 5) achieve academic excellence.
THELMA BERNADINE KINNEY NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1988 to assist a needy and deserving student in the School of Nursing.
MCKINNEY-SHAW NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to undergraduate nursing students who show high academic promise and financial need.
HEATHER MILLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
To provide undergraduate scholarships to student in the School of Nursing. First preference shall be for graduates of Wheeling Park High School in Wheeling, WV (Ohio County). Second preference for other residents of Ohio County and third preference shall be for West Virginia residents. Recipients to be determined by the School of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Services.
BARBARA ANN NEAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship recipients shall be regularly enrolled students in the WVU School of Nursing. Preference will be given to RN-BSN and RN-MSN students. Recipients shall demonstrate high academic promise as determined by appropriate officials of the WVU School of Nursing.
PENDLETON COUNTY SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship shall provide undergraduate scholarships for students from Pendleton County. First consideration shall be for students enrolled in the School of Nursing. Recipients shall be determined by the appropriate officials in the School of Nursing in conjunction with Student Financial Services.
MARGARET FAE PERRY SCHOLARSHIP
Funds shall be used for scholarships in the School of Nursing.
CATHERINE A. RELIHAN MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Available to undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and a strong interest in a career in bedside or palliative care or in oncology care.
CHERYL TOOMBS RICHTER NURSING EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship shall provide undergraduate scholarships to students in the School of Nursing. First preference shall be for students from Fayette or Raleigh counties. If there are no qualified residents, other West Virginia residents who meet the selection criteria may receive the scholarship. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and financial need. A student who is a recipient one year is eligible for consideration in any other year provided they continue to meet the selection criteria.
GEARLEAN MARIE SLACK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to undergraduate nursing students who show high academic promise and are natives of West Virginia.
BETTY MAREA SMITH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Available to nursing students who demonstrate financial need and high academic promise.
IDA W. SMITH MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to undergraduate nursing students who show high academic promise, financial need, and are natives of West Virginia.
GRETA B. STEVENS SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to undergraduate nursing students at the Charleston division. The Charleston Area Medical Center School of Nursing will make the selection. Must submit your FAFSA by March 1.
DR. REZIN D. STOUT SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to nursing students who are graduates of high schools in Barbour and Taylor counties of West Virginia.
BEULAH TEFT-WEBB NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship available to students in the School of Nursing. Must demonstrate financial need and academic promise. Preference to students from Wood County, WV. Must file the FAFSA by March 1. Selection is made by the School of Nursing Scholarship Committee.
THE HEALTH PLAN SCHOLARSHIP
The Health Plan is offering a need based scholarship (usually determined by Pell Grant eligibility during undergraduate years), intended to offset educational costs (tuition, fees, and required laptop/support fee), for full-time individuals obtaining their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and interested in practicing in the State of West Virginia. The student must be originally from The Health Plan Service Area. Scholarship applicants must originally reside in one of the service area counties (those in green). The scholarship can be renewed at the discretion of The Health Plan. Funding is limited and awards will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Repayment required if student does not practice in the State of West Virginia post-graduation. Application can be found here: The Health Plan Scholarship application and must be completed by May 1. The Health Plan will notify recipients if selected.
VALLEY HEALTH NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
Available to undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and be a resident of Hampshire or Morgan County in West Virginia.
WEST VIRGINIA NURSES ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is provided to a West Virginia resident who has the highest grade point average and the greatest need.
WEST VIRGINIA SCHOOL OF NURSING OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP
To provide undergraduate scholarships for BA/BS prepared students enrolled at West Virginia University School of Nursing in the Fast Track Program or other non-traditional students in the undergraduate nursing program. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and financial need. Recipients one year are eligible for consideration in any other year provided they continue to meet selection criteria. Recipients shall be determined by the appropriate officials in the School of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Support and Services. A FAFSA must be submitted.
GERALDINE CORE WILLIS SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to nursing students who meet the following requirements: 1) resident of West Virginia; 2) graduate of a West Virginia high school; 3) demonstrate financial need; and 4) have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
WVU SCHOOL OF NURSING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION BOOK SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship is available to provide funds for the purchase of textbooks for sophomore and junior students in the School of Nursing. Recipients must demonstrate financial need and academic promise. A FAFSA must be filed. Selection is made by the School of Nursing.
RICHARD AND JEWELL WUNDERLICH SCHOLARSHIP
Return to TopThe scholarship shall support West Virginia residents of the two lowest income counties of the state. First preference is for undergraduate students in the School of Nursing, second preference is for graduate students in the School of Nursing who have a clinical interest in serving children. This includes those in the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program as well as students in the Family Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice programs. Recipients shall demonstrate academic promise and financial need. If there are no nursing students from the two lowest income counties in West Virginia, residents from other under-represented/underserved areas of the state shall be considered. Recipients shall be determined by the appropriate officials in the School of Nursing in consultation with Student Financial Support and Services. A FAFSA must be submitted.
Undergraduate Nursing Loan Opportunities
DR. FRANK LEMOYNE HUPP SCHOLARSHIP LOAN FUND
Eligible applicants must be residents of West Virginia for at least three years; be a current member of the WVNA or WVSNA; have financial need in postgraduate studies; and be of good moral character. THE NORMAN W. SMITH EDUCATIONAL LOAN TRUST
The purpose of the “Norman W. Smith Educational Loan Trust” is to provide loans to students of Berkeley County, WV who are pursuing a minimum of a B.S. degree in the field of ministry or medicine (including nursing, pharmacy and dentistry). While priority will be given to Berkeley County, Morgan and Jefferson Counties can also be considered if resources permit. Loans are awarded on a semester basis by a selection committee consisting of four residents of Berkeley County. Members are from the Berkeley County Medical Society, Berkeley County Board of Education, Berkeley County Ministerial Assoc. and Shepherd College. Completed applications must be received for the fall semester by April 15th and the spring semester by September 15th. Applications may be obtained in the WVU Hub, or by calling the Trust Department of Huntington National Bank (304) 348-4582.
NURSING STUDENT LOAN (NSL)
Federal loan program approved under Public Law 100-607. NSL provides limited loan funds to participating institutions. The maximum award for Nursing Student Loans is $3,300 for any academic year and $5,200 for each of the final two years of study. The interest rate is 5%. No interest accrues during the in school period or during the 9-month grace period following graduation. Loans are restricted to students who 1) are citizens or nationals of the United States, 2) are enrolled or accepted for enrollment at least half time and 3) demonstrate financial need by completing the FAFSA. Preference is given to full time students with “exceptional need.” Must file FAFSA by March 1. Parental information is required regardless of dependency status.
