WVU Net Price Calculator

Please note that due to FAFSA simplification changes and delays in the release of the 2024-2025 FAFSA, information in the Net Price Calculator does not yet reflect information for the 2024-2025 financial aid year.

What Is the Net Price Calculator?

The Net Price Calculator (NPC) is a tool used to estimate the cost of attendance and federal aid eligibility for domestic, first-time freshmen. Estimated cost of attendance is the total amount it may cost to go to school. It is composed of all educational expenses that you may accrue while pursuing your education, including both billable (direct) costs like tuition payments and non billable (indirect) potential costs like transportation and rent. Visit our Estimate Costs & Aid webpage for more information on what cost of attendance means.

Students attending any of WVU's campuses - WVU Morgantown, WVU Potomac State College in Keyser, or WVU Institute of Technology in Beckley - may use the calculator. The calculator estimates costs based on tuition, fees, housing, and food costs for the current 2023-2024 academic year.

What Information Do I Need to Use the NPC?

When using the calculator, you will be asked to submit information such as your state of residency, anticipated major, and high school graduation year. Academic information (overall GPA and test scores) is also requested and encouraged for the most accurate estimate but is not required to receive your estimate.

You will also be asked if you are able to provide your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which you receive after you submit your 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your EFC is located on the Student Aid Report (SAR) you receive after submitting your 2023-2024 FAFSA.

Please note that due to FAFSA simplification changes and delays in the release of the 2024-2025 FAFSA, information in the Net Price Calculator does not yet reflect information for the 2024-2025 financial aid year.

Why Are These Estimated and Not Actual Costs?

Actual institutional fees such as tuition are approved by the WVU Board of Governors - usually finalized in summer for the new, upcoming academic year that begins in the fall. So, costs are often not finalized until a few months before the fall semester begins.

In addition, billable (direct) costs can be impacted by changes that students make on their account, such as changes to their campus, major, residency, enrollment, or choices they make for on-campus housing or dining plans.

Non billable (indirect) costs provided in the NPC are averages based on what students commonly spend. Non billable (indirect) costs are educational expenses a student may have that are usually not billed by the University, such as books, transportation, and personal expenses. These costs can also be impacted by choices made by students, such as choosing to buy used versus new books versus renting books. For non billable (indirect) costs, we recommend that students develop their own budget based on their actual expenses.

In Addition to Costs, What Financial Aid Eligibility Is Calculated?

The NPC only calculates eligibility for federal financial aid programs - examples include the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Work-Study, and federal loans.

If you are a resident of West Virginia, the NPC will also estimate potential eligibility for the two most common WV state financial aid programs - the Promise Scholarship and the WV Higher Education Grant. Please note that the Promise Scholarship requires a separate application (due March 1, 2023 for the 2023-2024 aid year), and applicants must also submit their FAFSA by March 1, 2024 to be considered. The WV Higher Education Grant requires submission of the FAFSA by April 15, 2024.

The priority submission deadline for submitting the FAFSA is usually March 1, but the 2024-2025 priority deadline has been removed due to the delayed FAFSA launch.
