Direct Loan Exit Counseling

Important requirement for all students who have borrowed or are currently borrowing federal student loan funds and who are either dropping below half-time enrollment or leaving WVU during or at the end of the current semester:

For example, if you are …

  • dropping below half-time enrollment (see definition below)
  • graduating
  • transferring to another school
  • sitting out this term
  • beginning a leave of absence
  • stopping out of college

If so, you are required to complete an Exit Counseling for borrowers in the federal loan programs shortly before you graduate, withdraw, or otherwise cease to attend school at least half-time.

If you are graduating, you should automatically receive information via e-mail with instructions for completing the Exit Counseling process. If you do not receive these materials before the end of the semester, you must contact Heather Forquer, the WVU Loan Officer, at the Office of Student Accounts at 304-293-2809 so that information can be sent to you to provide you with a PIN for the Exit Counseling process.

If you are leaving at the end of this semester WVU or dropping below half-time enrollment during this semester, you must notify Heather Forquer, the WVU Loan Officer, at the Office of Student Accounts at 304-293-2809 so that information can be sent to you to provide you with a PIN for the Exit Counseling process.

STUDENTS REQUESTING FEDERAL LOANS MUST BE REGISTERED AT LEAST HALF-TIME

Undergraduate level students are considered to be half-time as long as they are enrolled for at least 6 credit hours during any term for which they are requesting federal loans.

Graduate and Professional level students are considered to be half-time as long as they are enrolled for at least 4 credit hours during Fall or Spring terms or 3 credit hours during Summer term to be eligible for federal loans.

Students who have received information regarding Exit Counseling and their PIN will be directed to complete the process online through our servicer Educational Computer Systems Inc. (ECSI).

What if I do not complete the Exit Counseling?

Students who do not complete Exit Counseling before leaving WVU, will have a hold placed on their records until the requirement is satisfied. The hold prohibits you from obtaining grade transcripts and/or diplomas and from registering for classes at West Virginia University. Once you have completed the loan exit counseling requirement, the hold will be released.
