Direct Loan Exit Counseling

Important requirement for all federal student loan borrowers who are either dropping below half-time enrollment or leaving WVU during or at the end of the current semester:

For example, if you are …

  • dropping below half-time enrollment (see definition below)
  • graduating
  • transferring to another school
  • sitting out this term
  • beginning a leave of absence
  • stopping out of college

If so, you are required to complete Exit Counseling at www.studentloans.gov before you graduate, withdraw, or otherwise cease to attend school at least half-time.

If you are graduating, you should receive an email to your MIX account and/or letter to your permanent address on file with instructions for completing the Exit Counseling process.

STUDENTS REQUESTING FEDERAL LOANS MUST BE REGISTERED AT LEAST HALF-TIME

Undergraduate level students are considered to be half-time as long as they are enrolled for at least 6 credit hours during Fall, Spring, or Summer terms.

Graduate and Professional level students are considered to be half-time as long as they are enrolled for at least 4 credit hours during Fall or Spring terms or 3 credit hours during Summer term.

How do I complete the Federal Direct Loan Exit Counseling?

  1. Go to www.studentloans.gov
  2. Log in with your Federal Student Aid ID
  3. Click on “Complete Counseling”
  4. Select “Start Exit Counseling” under the Exit Counseling section

*Note: If you have a Federal Perkins Loan or Institutional Loans, you will receive a different exit counseling communication from Heartland/ECSI. As these loans are not within the Federal Direct Loan program, they have a separate exit counseling requirement.
